TWINNING PROJECT TR 09 IB EN 03

EU TWINNING PROJECT ON WATER QUALITY MONITORING

This is a Twinning Project between the Netherlands, France, Spain and Turkey.

The Water Framework Directive of the European Union provides the general principles of integrated river basin management. Its main focus is to integrate economic and environmental aspects to secure sustainable management of water resources. Its main objective is to achieve a good water status. The implementation of this directive is a considerable challenge for EU member states and for candidate countries.

On the road to accession to the European Union, Turkey wants to develop river basin management plans for its twenty five river basins. Therefore a lot of data on the chemical, biological and hydro-morphological status of the surface water bodies in its river basins are needed. This Twinning project will contribute to that objective by making a national monitoring plan for Turkey as well as monitoring plans for the basins of Meric-Ergene, Susurluk, Akarcay, Sakarya, Buyuk Menderes and Konya. In the longer run it will allow Turkey to make river basin management plans for its twenty five river basins and execution of these plans will lead to the good water status.

The overall objective of the project is capacity building and training of the Turkish water authorities. For this purpose the national monitoring plan and the six monitoring basin plans will be made by both civil servants of Turkey and experts from the Netherlands, France and Spain and many other EU member states.
